The event happened on Monday morning when an bomb placed beneath a vehicle detonated, causing the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.
Sarvarov was the head of the armed forces' unit responsible for operational readiness.
Authorities indicated that one possible explanation suggests the alleged involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. So far, Ukraine has offered no public response.

Officials have been dispatched to the scene, which is reportedly in a southern district of the metropolis.
Reports indicate the detonation occurred in a car park close to a residential building.
Series of Assaults
Since the beginning of the large-scale conflict in Ukraine, a string of Russian military commanders have been subjected to assaults within Moscow.
This latest event comes after other serious incidents, including:
- General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a vehicle explosion in Moscow earlier this year.
- General Igor Kirillov was killed in late 2024 when a bomb placed on a scooter was set off from a distance.
While a source from Ukraine earlier linked Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such claims are not formally acknowledged as a matter of standard practice.
The war has increasingly seen covert operations reaching into the center of the Russian capital.
The investigation into General Sarvarov's death is still underway.
